What is the Community Art Exhibit?

The 2026 Community Art Exhibit "Colors of Gainesville," is a multi-generational, inclusive celebration of creativity hosted by First UMC-Gainesville. Transforming the Fellowship Hall and Chapel into a vibrant gallery, this event will showcase the diverse talent within our church and local community. From September 27 through October 4, we will invite guests to explore a curated collection that spans all mediums—from oil paintings and photography to fiber arts and sculpture - digital and analog - reflecting a wide array of styles and perspectives.

The purpose of this exhibit is to foster connection and inspiration by providing a shared platform for artists of all backgrounds. By removing the traditional barriers between amateur and professional creators, our hope is to:

  • Celebrate Artistic Diversity: Feature a rich tapestry of mediums and techniques from around our community.
  • Empower Emerging Talent: Provide young artists (ages 13+) and hobbyists the opportunity to exhibit alongside seasoned professionals.
  • Cultivate Community: Utilize our sacred and social spaces—the Chapel and Fellowship Hall—to spark dialogue and appreciation for the arts within the Gainesville community.

team of curators

The "Team of Curators" serve as the creative and organizational backbone of the event.  The team consists of 13 members and their role is to transform a collection of individual submissions into a cohesive, professional, and engaging experience for the public.

Here is a brief explanation of their primary responsibilities:

Vision and Selection
The team defines the overall theme and aesthetic of the exhibit. They review submissions from local artists, ensuring the selected works align with the exhibit's mission while maintaining a high standard of quality and diversity.

Narrative and Layout
Curators determine the physical or digital flow of the exhibit. They decide how pieces are grouped together to tell a story, manage the "conversation" between different artworks, and oversee the technical aspects of lighting, spacing, and labeling.

Community Connection
Acting as a bridge between the artists and the audience, the team often writes the exhibit’s introductory statements and catalog descriptions. They ensure the event is accessible, inclusive, and reflective of the community’s unique voice.
